  • Clamping: The mold is clamped shut.

  • Ejection: The finished part is ejected from the mold.

3. Thermoforming

Thermoforming involves heating a plastic sheet until it becomes pliable, then forming it over a mold. The main methods include:

  • Vacuum Forming: The heated sheet is stretched over a mold and vacuum is applied to pull it tight against the mold.
  • Pressure Forming: Similar to vacuum forming but with additional air pressure to improve detail and texture.
  • Drape Forming: The sheet is draped over a mold and allowed to cool.

Thermoforming is typically used for packaging, trays, disposable cups, and automotive parts.

4. Converting

Converting refers to the transformation of plastic film, sheet, or tubing into finished products. This can involve various processes such as:

  • Printing: Adding graphics or text to plastic films or sheets.
  • Laminating: Combining multiple layers of material for improved properties.
  • Slitting and Rewinding: Cutting large rolls into narrower ones.
  • Bag Making: Producing plastic bags from film.
