But how did they get there? How did they learn about making shampoo?

How Is Shampoo Made?
Shampoo is generally made by combining surfactants, co-surfactants, water, conditioners, foam boosters, and preservatives. Let’s talk about each one.
First of all, shampoos usually have about 70% water. That makes sense because you need water for the other ingredients to mix with. But water also helps dilute the detergents and conditioner to reduce scalp irritation.
Detergents, or surfactants, make up about 15% of the formula-and they’re important! A detergent traps oils and other contaminants on your scalp similar to the way soaps do in your dishwasher. Sodium lauryl sulfate is one of the common surfactants found in shampoos.
To improve the lather of the product, foam boosters, like betaines, are added.
Conditioning agents like polymers are also added to shampoos to offset the harsh effects of surfactants on your hair. Because of these ingredients, your hair doesn’t feel like straw when you’re done washing it.
Of course, a shampoo manufacturer could add dyes or fragrances to change the color and smell of the product. And medicated shampoos usually include a drug active ingredient like zinc pyrithione. But these additional ingredients are optional.
Shampoo Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process for shampoo is surprisingly simple. It consists of two steps: making a big batch of shampoo and then packing it into bottles.
First, all the ingredients are mixed together in large containers by workers called compounders. Then, the batch is sent to quality control, where they test it for things like proper pH, odor, color, and other specifics.
If it passes all the tests, it is approved. If not, the compounders have to try again.
Once approved by QC, the shampoo gets pumped out of the main tank into a holding container. From there, it goes directly to a filling line where bottles are filled and then capped.
